Icarus knew. As the sunlight burned closer, he knew. The height would be worth it, he had to have it. Even as the wax began to run down, and scald his back, the heavens embraced him. While his skin singed, his smile grew, for all along, everything before had lead to this. Complete worth. As the wings pulled away, the wind rushing in his ears paused, and for a moment, that lasted a lifetime, he hung there, like a star, suspended above the world, free, and immortal. The air caressed his cheek and began to whip around him again, and his eyes closed. They would never need to see another thing after that perfect infinite fleeting instant. The roar around him echoed the bursting joy in his heart and the Earth prepared for him to plant within her. Forever on fire, the planet embraced him. Every question answered. Icarus knew.

David August is an award-winning actor, acting coach, writer, director, and producer. He plays a role in the movie Dependent’s Day, and after its theatrical run, it’s now out on Amazon (affiliate link). He has appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, on the TV show Ghost Town, and many others. His artwork has been used and featured by multiple writers, filmmakers, theatre practitioners, and others to express visually. Off-screen, he has worked at ad agencies, start-ups, production companies, and major studios, helping them tell stories their customers and clients adore. He has guest lectured at USC’s Marshall School of Business about the Internet.
